30 Sep Family Farm opens for Fall in Jacksonville NC
The Howard family of Jacksonville NC has opened their 10-acre farm to the public as the fall season gets underway, according to a WNCT9 news story. This new local attraction, dubbed Hog Wild at Howard Farms, took several years to develop and celebrated its grand opening Sept. 21.
As the Howard family visited many farms throughout the state, the inspiration to build their own farm with a corn maze grew stronger and stronger. Krystal Howard, one of the farm managers, told WNCT9 that many people had approached her saying that the Jacksonville area could use more family-oriented places to visit.
The road to opening Hog Wild as an attraction was no cake walk because it weathered severe damage in Hurricane Florence and slight damage from Dorian. Howard said, “We lost our corn maze completely with Florence.”
So, the family had to completely rebuild the corn maze. Then, as they were getting ready to open the farm, Hurricane Dorian threatened the area. Fortunately though, 90 percent of the farm was intact after the storm rolled through. It just delayed the farm’s opening slightly.
Visitors to Hog Wild can browse a pumpkin patch, climb a tire mountain, make their way through five acres of corn maze, enjoy a kiddie barrel train ride and a good old-fashioned hayride. If your family wants to make a day of it, Hog Wild provides a picnic area where you can feast on a homemade lunch.
Hog Wild has a dual purpose though. Not only does it provide a place for families to play, it also serves as an educational destination for field trips where children learn about agriculture, farm families and their vital role in communities.
