Jacksonville NC city council considers options for Recreation Center

The Jack Amyette Recreation Center in Jacksonville NC sustained major damage during Hurricane Florence that roared through many coastal areas of North Carolina in September of 2018. So, the Jacksonville City Council is considering several options for rebuilding it. In fact, while they are rebuilding it, they are considering major changes. As part of this process, the council is inviting public input regarding which option is the most appealing.

Here is a brief rundown of the five options under consideration.

Option 1 –¬† Adding 1,180 square feet for a grand total of 9,680 square feet with the following add/change proposals:

  • Using the existing center, they propose repurposing and adding new program space
  • Improving the parking lot entrance
  • Elimination of gym
  • Cost saving potential

Option 2 – 9,600 square feet of recreation center with add/change proposals

  • Increased program space
  • Relocation of parks maintenance space
  • Additional parking and improved parking flow
  • Elimination of gym, which will realize cost savings
  • More effective use of corner lot

Option  3 РSpace additions totaling 19,500 square feet with add/change proposals

  • Positive partnership with nearby school, including shared parking
  • Provision of recreation space and gym
  • Relocation of parks maintenance space
  • Potentially higher cost with inclusion of a gym
  • This option will require a storm water solution.

Option 4 – Space additions totaling 23,400 square feet with add/change proposals

  • Net gain of one court
  • Relocation of parks maintenance space
  • Recreation space and gym available, but loss of some recreation space
  • Positive partnership with nearby school, including shared parking
  • Utilization of entire site
  • Potential for substantially higher cost
  • Storm water solution will be required.

Option 5 РRecreation Center with two courts totaling  19,220 square feet with add/change proposals

  • Use of existing corner
  • New facility
  • Regulation-sized court
  • This plan will result in a higher cost.
