Family togetherness in Jacksonville, NC

Jacksonville NC promotes family togetherness

The City of Jacksonville, NC Recreation and Parks Department offers plenty of opportunities for family entertainment throughout the summer.

One of those opportunities, Family Park Days, is already in full gear with a special park event planned for each month from June through September this summer. The first Family Park day already took place in June. This event celebrated National Fishing and Boating Week with free fishing activities for every family member. The recreation department provided fishing poles to participants that did not bring their own.

The next Family Park Day is called Circus Streets. Mom, Dad, and kids can watch circus-style entertainment, join in with carnival games, test their mettle in obstacle courses, try their hands at crafts, and enjoy music and eats such as popcorn and cotton candy. This event will start Saturday, July 13 at 10 a.m. and run until noon at the Riverwalk Crossing Park at 421 Court Street.

Then August’s Family Park Day features a Hawaiian Luau at the Northeast Creek Splash Pad (910 Corbin Rd.), which will be open for this event. Families can join in the dancing, crafts, games and other island fun August 10 from 6-8 p.m.

The season’s Family Park Days closes out for the summer with a Bubble Bash from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 14 at Phillips Park (150 Phillips Road). Parents and their children will be spending their Saturday morning blowing bubbles with their own personally created bubble wands, among other activities.

As the fall season begins, the Jacksonville Recreation and Parks department has added a special series of “pop-up” events during the week of Sept. 24-30, calling it TACO Week to observe Take a Child Outside week. Stay tuned on Facebook and Instagram to learn about details for these “pop-up” events.

Disney-loving families can look forward to watching the Jacksonville Performing Arts production of “Disney Under the Stars, Part 2” July 26,  7-8:30 p.m., at the Jacksonville Commons Amphitheater. Two Jacksonville dance groups – Riverwalk Youth Ballet and Richlands Dance Factory are joining the show cast for an evening of family entertainment. If you want a “sneak peek” at the show, check out the video on the Facebook page for Jacksonville Performing Arts.
