Managers of the Albert J. Ellis Airport, located in Onslow County NC, are seeking county residents’ good word with a vote in the airport’s favor. What is the vote for? The airport is competing for the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Mobi Award, according to WNCT9 News.

According to the county-owned airport’s website, Delta Air Lines and US Airways provide multiple daily inbound and outbound flights between Jacksonville, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

The Mobi Award focuses on projects blending various modes of transportation because multi-modal transportation is essential for North Carolina’s future. The Onslow County airport has already made some significant improvements and hopes to receive recognition for those. It is under consideration because of its six-year terminal redevelopment project. The planned improvements include new roadways, a passenger and executive terminal and passenger boarding bridges.

Although there is no cash accompanying the Mobi Award, recognition like this can draw statewide attention to the airport.

Airport Director Chris White said the following:

“It brings the entire county, the entire coast visibility. And as the public would see the leaders, the planners and the people who do transportation really care about their communities.”

The airport’s economic impact in its area is estimated to be $474 million.
