Onslow County Sheriff’s Office inviting applicants to Citizens’ Academy

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office has opened up sign-ups for its Spring 2020 Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy. This offers local residents insight into law enforcement and policing in today’s society. Officers hope to develop a better understanding of the community through positive contacts with residents.

An article on PoliceOne.com says, “It’s a tough time to be a cop.” So police leadership seeks, through this course, to counter the misconceptions, along with the fear and hostility, that generally surround law enforcement these days.

The article also says this:

“It provides an opportunity to humanize law enforcement officers, to get to know the actual person behind the badge.”

Participants can expect to learn about the following topics:

  • The overall operations of the county sheriff’s office
  • The civil process
  • A narcotics presentation
  • K-9 demonstration

Participants will also get to tour the Superior Court and detention center.

The Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy is a 10-week course that takes place every Thursday beginning February 6 and ending April 9. Participants will receive a certificate to commemorate their completion of the course.

How to apply

Onslow County residents who are 18 years of age or older are eligible to apply for the academy. Applicants must undergo a criminal background check covering the past five years. The background check will be evaluated as a basis for acceptance into the academy. This check is completed through the Onslow County District Court Office, and there will be a fee.

However, citizens with a North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) do not need to undergo any additional background check. All they need to do is present proof of a current CHP issued by North Carolina when applying for a place at the academy.

Seating is limited to the first 20 people who apply.
