20 Jun Summer fun in Jacksonville NC
Moms and Dads in Jacksonville, NC this summer don’t need to worry about hearing their kids utter the dreaded words, “There’s nothing to do.” The Jacksonville recreation department has that covered with a wealth of activities – daytime and evening – to keep the kids happily occupied this summer. Some of those are targeted directly to children in various age groups. Others provide some enjoyable family bonding time.
According to the City of Jacksonville’s Recreation and Parks department brochure, here is a sampling of child and family activities slated for this summer include:
Youth summer camps
- Voyager Camp (Age 6-11)
This camp includes a full day of activities such as skating, gymnastics and water park fun as well as special trips to a zoo, aquarium and cultural venues. Participants get a t-shirt.
- Teen Voyager Camp (Ages 12-15)
This camp adds more activities for the older youth such as a trip to Defy Gravity, bowling excursions, and a cultural trip to the Tryon Palace.
- Base Day Camp (Ages 6-11)
Features on-site activities with some field trips and guest speakers.
- Stepping Stones Camp (Ages 4-5)
Introduce your preschoolers to day camp life with a a half-day of activities that include story telling, crafts, water play and more.
Youth athletics include baseball for children ages 7-16; boys’ high school baseball, baseball for children with special needs (in September), skate park, and swimming lessons. There will also be registration in July for fall sports such as flag football (ages 6-12) and volleyball (ages 9-16).
Summertime Family Events
- Summer concerts at the Jacksonville Commons Amphitheater
The concerts have already begun and the remaining concerts will take place on the following dates: July 12 with the New Grass group Into the Fog; August 9th with the country band Tim Hall & Buffalo Country; and September 13 with the rock group Rivermist.
- Family-friendly Movies in the Park
The remaining Movies in the Park at the Jacksonville Commons Amphitheater include: The Grinch on July 5; Ralph Breaks the Internet on July 19; Bumblebee on August 9; How to Train Your Dragon 3 – Hidden World on August 16; and Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse on September 6.
